The Company: Darkroom Contemporary

01

About the company

We are building the worlds we want to see: meaningful work for artists, art that speaks to our time, and spaces that challenge the limits of what is possible.

Darkroom Contemporary is an award winning Cape Town–based contemporary performance company, founded in 2010 by Louise Coetzer and Oscar O’Ryan. Spanning live performance, dance film and digital forms, its practice is defined by artistic rigour, interdisciplinary innovation and the creation of works that travel across stages, screens and cultural contexts.

Darkroom Contemporary is a research & development company focused on merging dance with interdisciplinary and developing technologies, rooted in South African lived experience. The company works at the intersection of choreography, contemporary performance and digital arts. Through the integration of tech based, live & public art, screendance and experimental performance practices, Darkroom Contemporary uncovers new possibilities for dance as an evolving art form. Innovation serves both artistic inquiry and audience experience, opening new ways of seeing, sensing and engaging with dance.

Darkroom Contemporary works have been presented at; DOCK11 Berlin (DE), ArtEZ (NL), Ars Electronica (AUT), Cinedans (NL), POOL Movement Art Film Festival (DE), the South African State Theatre, Zeitz MOCAA, Centre for the Less Good Idea, Norval Foundation, the British Film Institute (UK), and Third Coast Dance Film Festival (USA). e.ID: A Fugue

e.ID : A Fugue inhabits a suspended reality.
This hybrid performance unfolds as a choreographic meditation on identity, mortality and existence within an increasingly digitised world.

We are living between worlds: between the physical and the digital, the inherited and the constructed, the human and something not yet fully defined. This tension between the tangible - flesh, bone, DNA, memory, instinct - and an endlessly reproducible self is echoed through the work's physical performance, score, live and interactive structures.

autoplay

Autoplay is an AI Opera - an immersive, surreal encounter between human and machine. This hybrid performance interrogates identity and autonomy in a world shaped by digital systems. A charged game of musical chairs driven by artificial intelligence, it exposes questions of agency, influence, and control. Blending absurdity and satire with striking physicality, Autoplay reflects on our quiet acceptance of a dystopian present, while imagining us learning to navigate a brave new world.

Blue Funk

Blue Funk charts the physicality of fear. Through an escalating choreography of tension, repetition and release, the film evokes a world under pressure - a collective nervous system edging towards breaking point. The first South African screendance selected for Cinedans (NL), Blue Funk went on to receive Best of Festival at Third Coast Dance Film Festival (USA, 2024), Best Choreography at Utah and Boston Dance Film Festivals (USA) and Best Female Director at Mirada Corta (MEX, 2025).
